[+]2012-2013 Lease Renewal Information
Renewal Intention Forms will be available online January 26 at 9:00am. The deadline to submit your Intention Form is 11:59pm on February 19. To complete your Intention Form, go to www.southcampuscommons.com, select Hot Topics, and then select 2012-2013 Renewal Intention Form. You must complete your Renewal Intention Form even if you do not plan to return to South Campus Commons for the 2012-2013 lease year. Any current South Campus Commons resident that does not submit an intention form online by 11:59pm on February 19 will NOT be permitted to sign a lease for 2012-2013.
To receive text message reminders about renewal deadlines, text “Commons” to 99000.
Who is eligible to renew?
Students who will be entering their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of undergraduate study in Fall 2012 who are in good standing with the university are eligible to renew their lease. Students who will be entering their 5th year of undergraduate study in Fall 2012 are not eligible to renew.
What are my options?
Eligible South Campus Commons residents will have several options on their Intention Form from which to choose. Eligible South Campus Commons residents may choose to: stay in the exact same space; transfer to a different bedroom within the same apartment; transfer to a new bedroom in a new apartment; pull-in other eligible students to vacancies in their 2012-2013 space; or decline renewal.
Want to stay in your exact same space?
Great news! You will be able to renew your lease online! Simply select “I would like to stay in my same room” (Intent A) on your Intention Form and the system will guide you through your lease signing. No in-person appointment will be required.
Please note that the following groups will need to attend a special leasing meeting for their program and will not be able to renew online: Hinman CEOs; Beyond The Classroom; Apartment Living for Students of Different Genders; football players in dedicated Athletics units; and RAs.
Want to transfer to a different bedroom in the same apartment or transfer to a different apartment?
You must still complete your Intention Form online by February 19. You will not be able to renew your lease online and will be required to schedule a lease renewal appointment with the Leasing Office. On your Intention Form, select the intent option that best fits your intention and the system will guide you through scheduling your appointment.
Students transferring to a different bedroom in the same apartment or transferring to a different apartment altogether should plan to vacate their current unit on July 31, 2012 and move-in to their new apartment on August 22, 2012 (2012-2013 lease start date). Students who need to remain on-campus between July 31, 2012 and August 22, 2012 are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to renew the lease on their 2011-2012 space. South Campus Commons cannot guarantee that residents transferring apartments will be able to directly transfer to their 2012-2013 space.
Want to pull in a friend?
The only students eligible to be pulled in are current residence hall students in the 3rd Commitment Group (rising third-year students) who are in good standing with the University. Current South Campus Commons residents who are in good standing with the University are also eligible to be pulled in/transferred to your apartment. Rising seniors (current juniors) who do not currently live in South Campus Commons are NOT eligible for pull in.
Contact Information
Questions and concerns regarding the lease renewal process can be directed to the Leasing Office (SCC Building 6) via phone at 301-226-8001 or via email at leasing@southcampuscommons.com.
[+]How and When Do I Move Out?
- Watch the "
How NOT to Leave Your Apartment" video on youtube!
When moving out of the South Campus
Commons, you have two options to properly check out:
The Express Check Out Option
SCC offers an express check-out option for your convenience. When you have all of your belongings out of your unit and it is clean, you'll be ready to check-out. Just stop by your 24-hour service desk, complete a check-out form and submit your keys. It's that easy and it can be done at any time, day or night. The CA will give you a copy of your check-out form confirming that you submitted your keys. If you have lost your keys, you will be charged $335 for a lock change and replacement keys. Rent refund checks will be sent to the forwarding address you put on your check-out form. If you have a credit left on your account, you'll receive a check from Capstone within 6-8 weeks.
The Personal Check Out Option
You may wish to have the inspection done when you are present. Limited appointments, during normal business hours (9am - 5pm), are available for inspections. Stop by the Management Office in Building 1 or call (301) 314-2499 to make your appointment. You must schedule your appointment at least two business days before you want to check-out and when your appointment time arrives you must be ready to permanently leave your room. If you have not finished cleaning, or you have belongings which remain in your room, you will forfeit your appointment.
What day does my South Campus Commons lease end? When should I move out?
- If you did not sign a lease for 2011-2012 you must move out by 12PM on Sunday, July 31, 2011.
- If you signed a lease for 2011-2012 in a different apartment or bedroom other than your current one you must move out by 12PM on Sunday, July 31, 2011. Note: If you apply and are approved to be a direct transfer, you will not be required to move out of your current apartment and/or bedroom until August 2. The deadline to submit direct transfer applications is May 25, 2011 at 5PM. For more info on applying to directly transfer, please visit the "Transfer Information" section of our website. Feel free to contact a leasing agent at leasing@southcampuscommons.com or (301) 226-8001 with any questions.
- If you signed a lease for 2011-2012 in the same apartment and bedroom for 2011-2012 you are not required to move out of your apartment or to turn any of your keys in unless your carpet is scheduled to be replaced. Please make sure that you clear any person property out of the common areas including removing items from the walls, bathrooms, and kitchen counters if you will have new roommates for 2011-2012. This is to assist us with cleaning and performing maintenance in the apartment prior to the new residents' move-in on August 21, 2010.
Successful Move Out Checklist

Also, if you have caused damage in the common area, send an email to dewilliams@capstone-dev.com to inform our staff so that we know to bill you instead of your roommates.
[+]The Re-Leasing Process
The following information is designed to help you navigate the process if you wish to transfer your South Campus Commons lease to another student and end your lease early. Please review this information with any prospective re-lessor so that both parties fully understand the requirements of the process. You are responsible for finding an eligible student to take over your lease and you must complete all the steps in this process before you can be re-leased from the financial obligations of your lease.
Step 1: Find a Re-Lessor
Find a re-leasing candidate interested in taking over your lease for the remainder of the lease period. Though it is your exclusive responsibility to find an eligible re-lessor, there are many resources available:
* Post your available space on the Online Re-Leasing Bulletin Board so potential re-lessors may see your information. (Male) (Female)
* Review the Re-Leasing Bulletin Board to find potential re-lessors looking for leases to take over. (Male) (Female)
* Speak with friends and roommates about whether they know anyone living on-campus looking for housing.
* The Leasing Office in SCC Building 6 maintains a list of on-campus male and female students who expressed possible interest in Spring 2012 re-leasing. The lists can be requested in person at the Leasing Office or by emailing the Leasing Office at leasing@southcampuscommons.com (please include your name, 11-12 unit, and your UID# in the email).
* Post advertisements in designated areas on campus. Some bulletin boards/areas require University approval before posting. Contact the Department of Resident Life Assignments and Public Inquiry Office (301-314-2100) for more information about posting at South Campus Commons and the residence halls.
Step 2: Complete the online re-leasing process (Begin the process at least 3 weeks in advance of your transfer date)
*Submit the online re-lease form here. The online re-leasing request form is ONLY available to the current SCC resident.
* Information you will need to complete your request includes:
o Re-leasing candidate's information (you may want your re-leasing candidate to be present or on the phone with you when completing the request).
o Date you wish to move out. *
o Date your re-lessor wants to move in. *
* The above dates must be at least two (2) business days apart.
Step 3: Determine your re-lessor's eligibility
Once you submit a candidate through the online re-leasing form, the University of Maryland's Department of Resident Life will determine his/her eligibility. It takes approximately 5 business days to determine a re-lessor's eligibility through the University.
During the academic year, the criteria that the Department of Resident Life uses to determine student eligibility for SCC residency is as follows:
* Is the student a current University of Maryland College Park student or affiliate?
* Has the student completed his/her first year of post-secondary education?
* Is the student in good financial, judicial, academic, and registration standing with the University of Maryland?
* Did the student complete an online SCC application?
(For the SUMMER only, an applicant must be directly affiliated with the University of Maryland-College Park, and in good financial, judicial, and academic standing to lease at SCC. The applicant does not need to live on-campus.)
Step 4: Sign your re-leasing paperwork (at least five (5) business days in advance of your transfer date)
You and your re-lessor will need to schedule an appointment online with the South Campus Commons Leasing Staff to sign and submit your re-leasing paperwork and payments. This appointment must occur at least five (5) business days prior to your re-lessor's check-in date to avoid any delays.
You must bring the following items to your appointment:
If…
A. Resident’s appointment and lease end date are within the same month, Resident will only pay $100 lease transfer fee in certified funds at the time of the appointment.
Example: Re-leasing Appointment is scheduled for May 10th and lease end date is May 31st.
B. Resident’s appointment and lease end date occur in different months, Resident will pay $100 lease transfer fee and future rent installment(s) in certified funds at the time of the appointment. If Resident does not have all monies at the time of the appointment, the Re-leasing Appointment will be rescheduled.
Example #1: Re-leasing Appointment is scheduled for April 25th and the lease end date is May 31st, Resident pays lease transfer fee and May rental installment at the time of the Re-leasing Appointment.
Example #2: Re-leasing Appointment is scheduled for April 25th and the lease end date is June 30th, Resident pays lease transfer fee, and May and June rental installments at the time of the Re-leasing Appointment.
Your re-lessor must bring the following items to your appointment:
* Your re-lessor’s $25 check/money order for the Application Fee.
We do not accept cash, credit card, or debit card for this payment.
* Your re-lessor’s $300 check/money order for the Lease Reservation Fee.
We do not accept cash, credit card, or debit card for this payment.
* When applicable, a $65 check or money order for cleaning. Payment should be made out to Educated Cleaners.
* Application Fees, Lease Reservation Fees, and Lease Transfer Fees should be made payable to South Campus Commons and should contain the appropriate student's name (current or new resident), apartment number, and bedroom letter.
The following items will be provided by our leasing staff at your appointment:
* Re-lease Agreement to be signed by both parties
* Your re-lessor's Lease Agreement
* Your re-lessor's application and roommate matching form
I understand that when I re-lease my apartment for the Spring, I am relinquishing the remainder of my 2011-2012 lease with South Campus Commons to my re-lessor. My re-lessor will not have additional rights or priority to my assignment for the following lease year by virtue of completing a Spring re-lease.
Furthermore, my re-lessor is not permitted to stay in my assignment beyond July 31, 2012 unless they have already signed a same bed lease of their own for the 2012-2013 lease term. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to the move-out date except in the case of legal lease holders who submit a direct transfer application and are approved to directly transfer into their 2012-2013 unit. Appeals for lease extensions will not be granted under any circumstances.
By completing the re-leasing process, any direct transfer application submitted by the outgoing resident is rendered null and void.
[+]Commons Maintenance Corner
As a resident of the South Campus Commons, you have agreed to maintain your apartment or suite in a clean and sanitary condition for as long as you are living there. Here are some tips to make sure that you keep your unit in good shape!
Maintaining Your Carpet
- Vacuum weekly.
- Use an ironing board, not the floor to press clothing.
- Never ever, use duct tape, double sided or any other forms of tape on carpet. Duct tape leaves permanent sticky residue that result in the carpet needing to be replaced at your expense.
- Blot, do not scrub or wipe spills.
- Use only cleaning products that specify “safe for carpets” on the label.
Dirt and stains happen, but some residents make no effort to remove them from the carpet before they are set into the carpet fiber, thus creating permanent stains and damages, which results in resident damage fees. We expect that residents will make every effort to blot and clean up spills immediately.
Couch & Chair Care
As with carpeting, residents need to act immediately to blot up spills and remove food from the upholstery before stains set into the fabric. Residents are responsible for replacement costs if permanent staining or other damages have occurred.
Shelf & Drawer Liners
Some people discover quite a mess in cabinets and drawers when they move or do spring-cleaning. However, shelf liners catch it all; that is their purpose. The type of shelf liner you buy to place in your cabinets and drawers should be non-adhesive which means there is no glue attached it’s just cut and place. Using contact paper with an adhesive back requires removal and may leave a sticky residue, thus causing damage fees.
Dishwasher Operation & Care
Make certain dishes are scraped and free of food before placing them in the racks food particles left on dishes will jam the dishwasher. This includes cups and glasses. The disposal unit is not connected to the dishwasher. Do not crowd dishes, cups, glasses or silverware. Crowding impedes water circulation. For maximum cleaning efficiency, avoid covering the center hole in the lower rack. Only use automatic dishwashing products. Do not use dish soap or laundry detergents under any circumstances. They will block the washing action, clog outlets, damage motor, cause the unit to overflow, and deposit scum on the dishes and glasses. Damages are billable to the resident. You will save power by waiting to run your dishwasher until you have a full load. However, do not leave soiled dishes in the dishwasher for a long period or you may attract unwanted insects.
Garbage Disposal Operation & Care
A garbage disposal is a trouble-free unit if used properly. When using the disposal, water is necessary to wash the food waste down the drain. COLD water is not only economical, but is necessary to prevent overheating of the disposal motor. Even after the disposal is empty, it is wise to let the water run a few minutes to clear the line. The disposal is self-cleaning. Do not use caustic drain cleaners at any time.
DO NOT DISCARD THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR DISPOSAL:
Metal, glass, plastic, grease, paper, bones, banana peels, shells of any kind, rags, potatoes peels, celery and asparagus.
NOTE: If you cannot chew it, neither can your disposal.
If a spoon, bottle cap, or other foreign items become lodged in the disposal, DO NOT attempt to retrieve it. Please follow the necessary steps in filing a work order and Maintenance will respond within 24-48 hours.
Cleaning the Bathroom Sink & Tub
To clean, use water and any suitable, non-abrasive bathroom cleaner. Cleaning products that contain certain solvents such as acetone, turpentine are prohibited and can cause major damage to the surfaces. Scouring pads that are made with polyethylene, nylon or contain no abrasives may be used. CAUTION: The use of rubber or plastic mats is not recommended. If used, do not leave mat on the tub bottom after use because of possible surface degradation.
We Recycle
Every South Campus Commons Building has a trash room and recycling receptacles on every floor. In addition, there is main recycling room on the first floor of every SCC Building. These rooms are clearly marked and are for residents use only.
Recycling in Apartment Units
Each South Campus Commons apartment is provided with one blue recycle bin that is located in the kitchen/common area; these bins are for in unit use only and are the property of SCC. Recycling is easy as no sorting is required. If it is recyclable, put it in the bin. Unfortunately, some recycle bins will likely be misplaced. If that happens, the residents are financially responsible for replacement of the bin.
Conserve, Preserve and RECYCLE.

[+]Building 7 Maintenance Information
Welcome to the brand new South Campus Commons Building 7
Striving for LEED Gold
What is LEED?
LEED stands for
Leadership in
Energy and
Environmental Design. It was formulated by the U.S. Green Building Council. Based in Washington D.C., the Green Building Council is a nonprofit coalition developed by the leaders of the building industry. LEED is a nationally recognized certification program that has produced a standard in green development and building designs. It promotes the use of environmentally friendly products and materials used to development sustainable green
buildings. Green building construction uses these materials to make healthy environments for humans and pets, to conserve water and energy, and to use materials that have a low impact on the integrity of the natural environment.
What is LEEDS function?
LEED certification is being used to bring sustainability into building design, through a nationally recognized standard of excellence. This is a high standard that, if met and certified, more buildings will be officially safe for both the environment and the people who use them. This is a massive effort that involves the federal, state and local governments adopting green standards in building codes, as well as banks who approve the funding for such green projects. The application of green standards is incorporated into the plans of architects and engineers, and construction managers and interior designers coordinate the use of materials and build according to code and plans. The LEED objective is currently implemented both domestically and internationally, so this is a worldwide effort to change the environment of the world, one green building at a time.
What are the benefits of LEEDS?
The LEED certification is an involved process of verifying and certifying the total design of your building project. The certification of the efficiency of your building allows you to take advantage of benefits of going 'green,' including state and local incentives, not to mention the efficiency of the building itself. Certification can be acquired on four different levels, each based on the grade in sustainability, efficiency in water usages, atmosphere and energy, materials and resources, and the quality of the indoor environment. The levels are certified, silver, gold and platinum for new construction projects, and will soon include commercial, new home and neighborhood development projects.
When looking for new appliances for building 7 we looked for ENERGY STAR products, which have met EPA and U.S. Department of Energy guidelines for energy efficiency. In 2006, the ENERGY STAR program saved energy equivalent to taking 25 million cars off the road and saved Americans $14 billion in utility costs.
Dishwasher Operation & Care
Your new energy efficient dishwasher is equipped to use 40% less energy than the older models. Make certain dishes are scraped and free of food before placing them in the racks. Food particles left on dishes will jam the dishwasher; this includes cups and glasses. The disposal unit is not connected to the dishwasher. Do not crowd dishes, cups, glasses or silverware. Crowding impedes water circulation. For maximum cleaning efficiency, avoid covering the center hole in the lower rack. Use only automatic dishwashing products.
DO NOT DISCARD THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR DISPOSAL:
Metal, glass, plastic, grease, paper, bones, banana peels, shells of any kind, rags, potato peels, celery and asparagus.
NOTE: If you cannot chew it, neither can your disposal.
If a spoon, bottle cap, or other foreign item becomes lodged in the disposal, DO NOT attempt to retrieve it. Please follow the necessary steps in filing a work order and Maintenance will respond within 24-48 hours.
Scouring pads that are made with polyethylene, nylon or contain no abrasives may be used. CAUTION: The use of rubber or plastic mats is not recommended. If used, do not leave mat on the tub bottom after use because of possible surface degradation.
Front-Loading Washer/Dryer Operation & Care
Washing machines may come in different sizes and shapes, but ultimately have the same features and purposes. They all require the proper settings, soap, water and clothes to wash. Yet, there are a few things you should know in order to properly use a washing machine:
Load your clothes loosely in the washing machine. Load the laundry up to the top row of holes in the tub. DO NOT OVERLOAD. Overloading causes floods, which can result in damage charges. Area rugs of any type are not permitted in the washing machines or the dryers. This includes bathroom rugs.
Use only High Efficiency detergents, which should be added to compartment (B). Do not use liquid dish soap or dishwasher soaps. All liquid soaps should be used according to the recommendations listed on the packaging. Your washer has separate compartments for adding liquid bleach and fabric softener. If you are adding liquid bleach it should be added to compartment (C) and fabric softener should be added to compartment (D), please follow the instructions on the bleach and fabric softener packaging to find out how much and when you should add them
Getting to know your new energy efficient, low impact appliances.
Dual Flush Toilets and How They Work
It's an interactive toilet design that helps conserve water. The dual flush toilet uses a larger diameter trapway that doesn't clog as often as a conventional toilet, needs less water to flush efficiently and saves more water than a low flow toilet when flushing liquid waste.
Why Fluorescent Lighting?
Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) last 10 times longer than a standard bulb and use at least two-thirds less energy.
Programmable Thermostats
While turning down your apartment thermostats temperature a few degrees during your apartment’s occupied hours is helpful in terms of energy conservation, it's at night and when you're away from the apartment that you can turn down the thermostat even more, thus significantly reducing your energy usage.
Microwave Oven Care & Operation
Your new microwave not only saves energy; they help prevent air pollution and save money, frequently with better performance. Microwave ovens are a great convenience in the kitchen, and here is an easy way to clean them. With a damp cloth, wipe the interior of the microwave. Wash tray in the sink with dish soap. Dry and return to microwave.
Electric Range & Range Hood
The key to keeping a kitchen range operating properly is to clean it regularly. Clean up spills soon after they occur. Some acidic foods, such as tomato products, can damage the surface of the cooktop and interior of the oven. Cleaning the range with regular dish soap and warm water is all that is required no chemicals are necessary.

Kitchen & Bathroom Floors
For common kitchen spills such as food, grease, or sticky messes, first attack the spot with a damp paper towel. If that does not work, concentrate your efforts with the appropriate cleaners and a little bit of hard work.
Here is what you need to know:
Begin by sweeping the floor, being sure to flush dirt from corners and under appliances. First attempt to clean your floor with warm water and a mop. Often, no detergents are needed. If the dirt remains, use mild dish soap in warm water. Do not over apply dish soap – only light bubbles should appear in water. Using the mop or soft cloth, scrub the floor gently. Stubborn spots may require a rubber bristled brush and cleaning on your hands and knees. Use towels to clean up excess moisture. Allow the floor to dry completely.
Shelf & Drawer Liners
Some people discover quite a mess in cabinets and drawers when they move or do spring-cleaning. However, shelf liners catch it all; that is their purpose. [+]Study Abroad
STUDY ABROAD Information
The following information is intended only for PREVIOUS South Campus Commons or Courtyards residents interested in returning after participation in a Study Abroad Program.
Please refer to the
Study Abroad Information link with information that will be essential in preparation of the 2011-2012 leasing process.
If you have not lived in South Campus Commons or The Courtyards previously, you are required to meet all of the requirements of all first-time residents as outlined in the "Prospective Residents" section.
If I go abroad do I lose my priority to live in South Campus Commons again next year?
No, as long as you meet all requirements you will be able to lease with South Campus Commons for the following year. To be considered eligible for return, the University must verify your participation in a University-approved program for the Spring 2011 semester and that your University account is in proper standing. Additionally, your rental account with us may not have any outstanding dues. If you have a balance with us, it must be paid prior to your lease signing.
Please be advised that even though you are permitted to return as a 2011-2012 lease holder, only the person occupying a space DURING the Spring 2011 semester is granted "current resident" or "same bedroom renewal" rights. While you are not permitted to lease as a "same bedroom renewal," you can lease as either a pull-in of a Spring 2011 resident or as a transfer resident.
What is required of me to lease with South Campus Commons while I am abroad?
Please review the following requirements carefully, as failure to complete each of the steps will jeopardize your 2011-2012 housing with us. As a study abroad student, you should be prepared to have the following items submitted to us on your behalf.
- Proxy Form: South Campus Commons allows students to have their lease signed by proxy with the use of this document. The proxy you assign will be able to make all necessary housing decisions and sign all required documentation on your behalf, so please make sure you discuss all information necessary for their completion of your housing selection. You must sign and complete this document then provide your proxy with the form so they can present it at your leasing appointment. Please do not send proxy forms directly to our offices.
- South Campus Commons Renewal Intent Form: This form is available for online submission and must be completed by 11:59pm on Wednesday, February 9, 2011. It is required of all current SCC lease holders and all residents intending to return from Study Abroad. If you want to "pull-in" prospective roommates for next lease year, you must provide us with the requested information on the intent form (their name and UID). Your proxy and all prospective pull-ins should discuss and then schedule a lease signing appointment appropriate for your group.
- Online Application [Due by 11:59pm on February 9, 2011]: Your completion of the application allows a current resident to list you as a PULL-IN and allows the Department of Resident Life to assess your current eligibility status. As long as you are in a University-approved program or a sanctioned absence, you may be approved by Resident Life. The application is also necessary for us to obtain information for your file that your proxy will not easily be able to provide. The application is mandatory even if you have submitted one to us previously. All residents returning from a study abroad program must complete this application by 11:59pm on Wednesday, February 9, 2011.
- Guaranty of Lease: When returning to South Campus Commons, you are required to submit a new notarized Guaranty of Lease form. Because of the large number of students who want to return from Study Abroad programs, we are not able to research our file archives for previously submitted paperwork!
- Lease Reservation Fee: Lease Reservation Fees are collected at the time of your lease signing and applied towards your first rental installment. Your proxy is required to submit your $300 Lease Reservation Fee at the time of your lease signing. All payments are to be made by check or money order.
What happens if I sign a full lease and then go abroad for all or part of the year?
South Campus Commons allows students to release their space to an approved University of Maryland student. It is the responsibility of the current lease holder to find an eligible student to take the lease. If you are unable to find an eligible student you will be obligated to the lease you signed.
Should I sign a full lease if I will be studying abroad for a semester or graduating in December 2011?
We do not recommend that you renew your lease in this case, as you could find yourself obligated to twelve rental installments and yet not be able to live in your apartment for a significant portion of the term of your lease.
If you need further information on returning to South Campus Commons, please contact the South Campus Commons Leasing Office at leasing@southcampuscommons.com.

[+]Frequently Asked Questions About Bed Bugs
What are bed bugs?
Cimex Lectularius, or the common bed bug, has existed for thousands of years. Mentioned in ancient writings all the way back to the time of Aristotle, this small, flattened insect feeds on the blood of humans and animals. Bed bugs usually travel in small groups. When immature, bed bugs are a pale yellow color. Adult bed bugs are a reddish brown color and typically around a quarter of an inch long, or about the size of an apple seed.
The bed bug is most active at night, preferring to hide close to where its hosts sleep. Its size and shape make it adept at hiding in crevices in bedding or furniture. They can hide behind electrical outlets, picture frames, door frames as well as a number of other areas.
Bed bugs are extremely hardy and can live up to 18 months without eating. Bed bugs can be found in vacant as well as occupied apartments.
What does a bed bug bite feel like?
Mot bed bug bites are actually painless, but may later turn into large, itchy skin welts. These welts do not have a red spot in the center as do the bites from fleas.
Are bed bugs dangerous?
Bed bugs are a nuisance, but are not known to spread diseases to humans.
How does an apartment home become infested with bed bugs?
In most cases, people carry bed buts into their homes unknowingly in infested luggage, furniture, bedding, or clothing. Used furniture, textiles, and clothing could be infested with bed bugs unbeknownst to the seller or buyer. Bed buts may also travel between apartments through electric conduit, small crevices or cracks in walls and floors.
How can I keep bed bugs out of my home?
Wash clothing and inspect luggage immediately after returning from a trip. Inspect used items such as furniture, textiles or clothing for bed bugs before bringing it into your home. Never bring discarded bed frames, mattresses, box springs or upholstered furniture into your home.
How do I know if my apartment home has bed bugs?
You may notice itchy skin welts. You may also see the bed bugs themselves, small bloodstains from crushed insects, or dark spots from their droppings. It is often hard to find them because they hide in or near beds, other furniture, and in cracks.
Do bed bugs only infect dirty homes?
Having bed bugs doesn’t mean that a person or their home is dirty. These pests have been found in the most exclusive and prominent of places, such as five star hotels and luxury cruise ships. They don’t discriminate between one star and five star; bed bugs can be found everywhere.
Maintaining a clutter-free environment, however, will make it easier to eliminate bed bugs if they should be found in your apartment home.
What should I do if I think my apartment home has bed bugs?
Contact the management office at once so that we may conduct a thorough inspection. We will provide you with step-by-step instructions for preparing for an inspection and treatment, if necessary.
I had bed bugs. How can I keep my infested items from infesting someone else’s home?
Never resell or donate infested furniture, textiles or clothing. If you throw infested furniture away, make it undesirable to others by cutting or poking holes in the upholstery or making it unusable. Paint or tape a sign to it that says “Infested with Bed Bugs”.
